چکیده

Ever since Pauli' first recommended thiocyanates for the treatment of hypertension almost forty years ago, the therapeutic value of these drugs has been a subject of controversy. Interest apparently declined after Ayman's pronouncement,' in 1931, that thiocyanates lacked dinical usefulness because there appeared to be an insufficient margin of safety between the hypotensive and the toxic doses. Recently Barker2 applied a method for the determination of cyanates in blood and again revived interest in the thiocyanates by claiming that their effective therapeutic range lay in a blood serum content of from 8 to 12 mg. per cent of thiocyanate, while intoxication was not encountered until a serum level of 15 to 30 mg. had been reached. By means of this improved control over the administration of the drug, Barker avoided the hazards of intoxication and achieved gratifying symptomatic results and significant amelioration of hypertension in the majority of his patients. The present study was stimulated by Barker's encouraging experience with his controlled method of treatment in a disease which has long eluded our therapeutic efforts.

Comparative effects of prolonged administration of cyanide, thiocyanate and chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) to goats.

The aim of the present study was to determine and compare the clinical, hematological, biochemical and histopathological changes induced by cyanide, thiocyanate and chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) in goats. Sixteen Boer-Spanish cross-bred female goats were divided into four treatment groups: (1) control, (2) potassium cyanide (KCN) at 3.8 mg kg(-1) day(-1), (3) potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) at 4...

Accidental intravenous bolus infusion of potassium chloride in a young man with hypokalemic periodic paralysis

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is anautosomal dominantdisease characterized by muscle weakness or paralysis with a matching fall in blood potassium levels. Paralysis attacks often occur in adolescence and are induced by strenuous exercise followed by rest, high carbohydrateor high sodiummeal content, sudden changes in temperature, and even excitement, noise, flashing lights and cold temperature...

Addition of Multimodal Therapy to Standard Management of Steady State Sickle Cell Disease

Most people on folic acid to boost erythropoiesis and prophylactic antimicrobials, the standard management of steady state sickle cell disease (SCD), have unacceptable numbers of crises. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of adding multimodal therapy with potassium thiocyanate and omega-3 fatty acids to the standard management of steady state SCD. Pre- and post-treatment nu...

The effect of lipoic acid administration on the urinary excretion of thiocyanate in rats exposed to potassium cyanide.

The oxidation of cyanide (CN-) to a much less toxic thiocyanate (SCN-) is the main in vivo biochemical pathway for CN- detoxification. SCN- is excreted mainly in urine. This study was performed to investigate the effect of lipoic acid (LA) on the urinary excretion of thiocyanate (SCN-; rhodanate) in rats. Groups of the animals were treated intraperitoneally (i.p.) as follows: group 1: potassium...

Demonstration of cross-protection between Pasteurella multocida type A and Pasteurella haemolytica, serotype 1.

Mice immunized with the potassium thiocyanate extract of Pasteurella haemolytica, serotype 1, were found to resist a challenge infection of P. multocida type A, thus demonstrating cross-protection. This finding was further supported by the finding that an antiserum directed against the potassium thiocyanate extract of P. haemolytica was bactericidal to P. multocida and vice versa.
